Dresden files restoration faith

Original review Butcher said he wrote it when he was in university, and was the third or fourth short story he ever written at that point, including his school projects! He or his publisher didn't think it was worthy of publishing at the beginning, but I didn't find any problem with the story or the writing-quality and quite enjoyed a quick, short and fun read.

I'm already reading Storm Front Dresden Files-1 , but thought I read the short story first to get how Butcher truly created the Harry Dresden character from the very beginning As it turned out, I wasn't disappointed.

It makes me even MORE excited to read through the novels, as I always hear how the "quality of the series only increased with each successive book". Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, here I come! View all 5 comments.

Jul 14, Katy rated it it was amazing. I read this as part of the Side Jobs anthology. Jul 07, Jim rated it liked it Shelves: 3series , 2fiction , paranormal-urban , 1audio. The first Dresden story written while Butcher was in high school according to his foreword. He said it wasn't good enough to publish, but didn't mention rewriting it extensively.

It was a little rough, but not bad. It's a free ebook, but I got it as an audio from the library. Very well narrated. I need something different and I think this will do the trick. A very interesting - and a bit disgusting - run-in with a troll and lots of characters briefly introduced. Oct 11, Jewlsbookblog rated it really liked it Shelves: What an interesting first meet for Harry and Karrin!

A spunky 12 year old tweenie, grumpy troll, and jaded partner.. Apr 21, Alondra Miller rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy. I needed this fix :. Sep 25, Lo9man88 rated it really liked it. This is a re-read in anticipation of the most wanted "peace talks". I read this short story years ago and my initial rating was 3 stars so I'm bumping that shit to 4, back then i was immature and i was used to harry the badass who flips cars when angered not to this pathetic weakling who couldn't handle a lil troll properly smh But now : reading this with a new perspective and a much improved set of eyes i can clearly appreciate it , you can say my faith is restored.

May 01, Meep rated it liked it Shelves: extra-coda. Just a little extra that shows the beginning of Dresden, his first meeting with Murphy and the need for Faith. Cute simple little story but nice enough for a free extra.

Shelves: read , urban-fantasy. It's only about the length of a chapter and tells the story of a case Harry worked before becoming a full-fledged private investigator. At the time he and his partner, Nick, ran Ragged Angel Investigations, an agency that searched for missing children.

This was an aspect of the story that I really enjoyed, and I thought Harry was very good with the girl he rescued. He seemed to have a kind, gentle side that I hope to see more of in the full-length novels of the series. There wasn't much in the way of magic in this novella, so I'm not sure precisely how Harry's powers work. The battle with the troll was fun, but Harry defeated him using his wits more than anything else.

I'm not certain whether he hadn't come into his full powers yet or if his powers simply have limits, but I'm definitely interested in finding out more about this intriguing character.

I also don't know if any of the secondary characters in this short story show up again in future books, but I wouldn't mind seeing more of them if they did.

Restoration of Faith was my first read by Jim Butcher. It may have been brief, but it gave me enough of a taste of his writing style to know that I like it and look forward to reading more. Restoration of Faith can be read for free on Jim Butcher's website and is also available in print as part of the anthology Side Jobs.

Nov 09, Pranta Ghosh Dastider rated it really liked it. Pretty decent short story, there is lack of action but that wasn't the main point anyways. The story emerges I think just to offer a glimpse onto the world of Harry Dresden.

And considering this was the first piece of writing on the Magician Detective I guess Jim himself was trying to visit the idea of such a being. I liked the cute little kid and his matured talking as well as honest view on the matters, I liked Harry's point of view on the things as the story progressed. Finally I was glad to Pretty decent short story, there is lack of action but that wasn't the main point anyways. Finally I was glad to see the young and thoughtful Murphy. Get yourself to read this nice little story if you have liked the series itself.

If you have not started the series, then you might want to start it first, or you may miss the charm of this story. Bundy, Manson, those other animals. Right here in Chicago, you've got the Vargassis working out of Little Italy, the Jamaican posses, others. World's full of them. I glanced at her face. She looked sad, and too wise for her years. My heart softened. They don't think about anyone else, really. Just themselves. Not even each other—except what they can do for one another.

And I'm just some toy that should get stuck in the closet and dragged out when people come over, so I can be prettier and more perfect than their toys. The rest of the time, I'm in their way. You can't make me go back to them. Why are you still doing this? And I got this stupid thing about leaving kids in the middle of big, mean cities after dark.

I see all these Disney shows about how much parents love their kids. How there's some sort of magical bond of love. But it's a lie. Like you and that troll. It was hard to hear that from a kid.

A ten year old girl's world should be full of music and giggling and notes and dolls and dreams. Not harsh, barren, jaded reality. If there was no light in the heart of a child, a little girl like this, then what hope do any of us have?

A few paces later, I realized something that I hadn't been admitting to myself. A quiet, cool little voice had been trying to tell me something that I hadn't been willing to listen to. I was in the business of wizardry to try to help people. To try to make things better. But no matter how many evil spirits I confronted, no matter how many would-be black magicians I tracked down, there was always something else, worse, waiting for me in the dark.

No matter how many lost children I found, there would always be ten times as many who disappeared for good. No matter how much I did, how much trash I cleaned up, it was only a drop in the ocean. Heavy thoughts for a guy like me, tired and beaten, my arms heavy with the girl's weight. Flashing lights made me look up. The mouth to one of the alleys between the buildings had been sealed off with police tape and four cars, blue bulbs a-whirl, were parked on the street around the alley.

A couple of EMTs were toting a covered shape out of the alley on a stretcher. The flashing strobes of cameras lit the all eyway in bursts of white. I came to a stop, hesitant. Maybe I should hand you over. I don't care. I swallowed. The Astors were Chicago's elite crowd. They carried enough clout around the old town to get a bum would-be private investigator put away for a good long time. And they could afford the best of lawyers. It's a lousy world, Dresden , the cool little voice told me.

And the good guys don't win unless they have an expensive attorney, too. You'd be in jail before you could blink. My mouth twisted into a bitter smile as one of the uniform cops, a woman, noticed me and cast a long frown in my direction. I turned around and started walking the other way. I kept walking. In the short 20 pages we also get a quick insight into what makes Harry Dresden so special , we learn of how his brain ticks and what his morals are and more importantly we find out about the first meeting of Harry and Murphy.

The Battle with the Troll was fantastic as well , since at this point Harry was still a flyweight amidst the heavyweight creatures and wizards in terms of magic , and during the actual battle he himself was fatigued so this battle had very little magic used and the magic that is used is actually pretty insignificant magic in terms of what Harry has in his arsenal , And all this was also entertaining to read.

So Dresden Fans , this is one to read if you can and non Dresden Files fan , go read the novels first than read this. Like Liked by 1 person. You are commenting using your WordPress. The officer is astounded that she just fought a troll and that they really do exist.

This is the first meeting between Harry Dresden and Karrin Murphy which is fun to see. Officer Murphy questions Faith about her kidnapping and Faith denies that Harry had anything to do with a kidnapping and that she instead ran away from home. Officer Murphy lets Harry and Nick go before her partner arrives. We get a glimpse of the type of person Harry is, we get a glimpse at his magic, and we are introduced to Karrin Murphy and we get to see when they meet for the first time.
